R&B/Soul singer Jaheim recently released his “Another Round” CD on Atlantic Records. From the first time I heard him sing, I’ve always envisioned that he would be the one to ascend to the top of the “A” list of Male Urban music vocalist. In my mind Jaheim would become the “King of R&B/Hip-Hop Soul, the perfect compliment to the Queen, Mary J Blige.

After a promising start, Jaheim’s career has sort of lost its way… until now! “Another Round” proves that Jaheim is still a force to be reckoned with. His voice still booming, this CD was launched to the world via the undeniable dance jam “Ain’t Leaving Without You”.

Jaheim will also have you moving on the mid-tempo grooves of “Her” and the radio friendly “Whoa”. The highlight of “another Round” definitely is his command of the soulful ballads. You’ll be mesmerized by “Closer”, Impossible”, “In My Hands”", “Till It Happens To You”. and the latest single “Finding My Way Back To You”

“Another Round” from Jaheim demostrates that he is in the game, and he’s headed to the Superstar status that is his destiny.

“Why We Laugh: Black Comedians on Black Comedy,” the groundbreaking film examining the history and cultural influence of American black comedy, will be available on DVD starting April 27, 2010.

Directed by noted actor-producer-director Robert Townsend (“Hollywood Shuffle”), the documentary, which originally screened at Sundance in 2009 in the Premiere section, features interviews with prominent scholars, politicians, cultural critics, and a host of notable comics, including Bill Cosby, Chris Rock, Keenan Ivory Wayans, Steve Harvey, and Katt Williams.

“Why We Laugh” tracks the evolution of black comedy from the character of Stepin Fetchit and minstrels in blackface to the politically tinged humor of Dick Gregory, and from the television success of Good Times and The Jeffersons to the big-screen accomplishments of stars such as Eddie Murphy and Whoopi Goldberg. The film also turns a perceptive eye on the controversial career decision of Dave Chappelle and the implications of corporate efforts to capitalize on the massive success of Russell Simmons’s Def Comedy Jam and Spike Lee’s The Original Kings of Comedy.

“’Why We Laugh’ is a major historical contribution to American culture,” said Codeblack executive vice-president Quincy Newell. “This film is a tribute to the way one courageous person with a microphone can change history.”

Newell produced the documentary which he co-wrote with John Long. The film is based on the book “Black Comedians on Black Comedy: How African-Americans Taught Us to Laugh,” by Darryl J. Littleton. Codeblack’s Clanagan, Richard Foos, and Littleton. Codeblack’s Clanagan, Richard Foos, and Littleton are executive producers on the project.

Director Townsend has been at the forefront of black cinema for 30 years and received a Career Achievement Award from the American Black Film Festival in 2002.

“Facts Of Life: The Soul Of Bobby Womack” is the most recent CD release by Calvin Richardson. As the title indicates, this project via Shanachie Entertainment is a tribute to Soul Music veteran Bobby Womack.

Bobby Womack has a vast and rich songbook, which has been somewhat under rated over the years. Calvin Richardson is a very talented singer whose voice and style is perfectly matched for this project.

Calvin shines throughout this album as he breathes new life into the Womack catalog, which is evident on the classic “Woman’s Got To Have It”

The highlights of “Facts Of Life” are “Across 110th Street”, “That’s The Way I Feel About ‘Cha”, “Daylight”, and “You’re Welcome Stop On By”. Ms Ann Nesby joins Calvin for a faithful rendition of “Love Has Finally Come At Last”, a hit ballad performed by Womack and Patti LaBelle back in the day.

I remember my introduction to the music of N’Dambi. I was making my rounds of the record shops down in The Village here in NYC a few years ago, looking for something new and exciting. I walked up to a listening station where I discovered the 2-disc “Tunin’ & Cosignin”, a wonderful blend of progressive Soul and Jazz rhythms complimenting her beautiful voice and lyrics. I became a instant fan.

Fast forward to 2009. The announcement for “Pink Elephant”, N’Dambi’s debut project for Stax Records created an immediate “buzz” for this CD. The first single is “I Can’t Hardly Wait”, a bouncy song which is catching everyone’s imagination. After all, everyone’s been in a love relationship that made you cry out “I don’t know why I keep f***in’ wit you!”

“Pink Elephant” is an excellent showcase of N’Dambi’s vocal prowness and songwriting abilities. You’ll be drawn in by the melodic “What It Takes”, “Nobody Jones”, “The World Is A Beat”, and hypnotic grooves of “Mind Blowin”.

On “The One”, “Take It On”, “Imitator”, and “Ooo Baby”, N’Dambi skillfully shares stories of love that you can relate to. We’re swept back in time with “Free Fallin”, a song whose style and feel embraces our storied musical heritage.

“Pink Elephant” is definitely one of the top Soul/R&B CDs of the year. Make a place in your library for the multi-talented N’Dambi.

For immediate release:

Gettin’ around? – No matter how you slice it, Universal Republic newcomer K’Jon has already arrived. He’s just making it official on August 4, delivering his aptly titled debut album, I Get Around to stores and online platforms in time for summer, having been more than adequately introduced to urban music fans this past spring thanks to the album’s soaring first single, “On The Ocean,” which has become a radio/club classic. The magnetic hit sizzled on the nightlife grid for months as a popular ‘steppers’ hit in tastemaker cities like Chicago before rocketing to the top spot on the Urban AC radio chart.

Often compared to stylish hit makers such as Ne-Yo and Robin Thicke, the talented K’Jon kept the production in-house on his debut effort, with the Detroit native guiding production and writing chores on a kaleidoscope of diverse songs that includes the passionate radio hit, as well as the mesmerizing “This Time,” the cool flow of “After The Clubs,” and some dynamo ballads – including the sweeping “Ill Never Forget,” among others. Says K’Jon: “The goal with this album was to make a record that covered a lot of emotional territory – the kind of record you would be able to listen to from beginning to end and want to hear again.” The imaginative songwriter even laid down a track that plays with the superhero mystique on the clever “Fly Away.”

But the Detroit native’s rise to stardom hasn’t been a smooth trajectory all the way. He earned his stripes in the motor city’s competitive underground urban music scene, launching various indie collaborations until his breakout 2004 cameo on the electric 2 Fast 2 Furious soundtrack with the hit “Miami.” Soon, he was opening for established stars such as Ludacris, even collaborating with the talented rapper – and subsequently – many other sought-after industry song-makers, like super-producers Cool & Dre, Ginuwine, Ne-Yo, T-Pain, and others.

Known for his fearlessness when delving into multiple genres of music, including soul, hip hop and R&B, K’Jon’s debut album reflects the same tenacity, just as his first hit single would come to separate him from the rest of the pack at one of the most crucial cross-roads of his career. “It was at a time when I was still trying to establish my identity,” he says. “I wrote the song literally thinking the music industry is kind of like bobbing in the ocean. How we all wonder if and when our ship is going to come in.” Rather than deliver the song to another established star, the intuitive artist decided to keep it as his own signature calling card, creating one of the most popular urban music hits of the year.

Longevity in one’s chosen profession is a testament to passion and consistency. This statement definitely applies to Soulful crooner Mr. Will Downing. It’s hard to believe that Will is celebrating his 20th year of bringing us his patented sensual grooves. As the saying goes, “time flies when you’re having fun!”

On June 17th, Peak Records will release Mr. Downing’s 14th album, appropriately entitled “Classique”. We’re blessed with a 10 song collection of tantalizing songs of love and relationships. Will’s influence is felt throughout as he wrote, and arranged many of the songs, and produced the project with friend Rex Rideout.

“Something Special”, “More Time (Tic Toc)”, and “Love Suggestions” have that easy going groove that will provide the perfect soundtrack for a breezy summer afternoon/evening. It wouldn’t be a Will Downing album without a few powerful romantic ballads. “I Won’t Stop”, and “Let’s Make It Now” are guaranteed to fan the flames of love. You’ll also appreciate Will’s emotional rendition of The Originals’ “Baby I’m For Real”, which features the vocal styling of Phil Perry.

If you enjoy smooth Soulful R&B, then Will Downing’s “Classique” will be a welcomed addition to your music library.

Over the years, I’ve become a big fan of British Soul music. It’s something about the jazzy, melodic, soulful sounds that capture my ear. Swing Out Sister has always been one of my favorite groups from across the pond, so I was pleasantly surprised when I received a copy of their new CD, “Beautiful Mess”.

Swing Out Sister, fronted by vocalist Corrine Drewery and keyboardist Andy Connell, after 20+ years and 9 albums continues to create an eclectic musical mix of R&B/Soul, Jazz, and Latin rhythms, infused with the Pop grooves of the late 60s/early 70s.

“Beautiful Mess” is the perfect CD for a carefree day. There is a nice variety of songs with engaging lyrics that will sweep you away to a place where your mind can run free. The project begins with the mid-tempo “Something Every Day” which sets the pace for the CD. You’ll also enjoy the groovy sound of “Butterfly”, the retro rhythm track of “I’d Be Happy”, and future fan favorite “My State Of Mind”.

Listen to “My State Of Mind”

Ms Corinne is at her best on the mystical “All I Say, All I Do”, “Out There”, and the emotional “Time Tracks You Down”. Andy Connell brings us a very cool instrumental “Butterfly Lullaby”, which could have been on the soundtrack for an early 007 flick.

If you’re looking for a CD with music diversity that will stimulate your music palate, Swing Out Sister’s “Beautiful Mess is the answer.
