“Why We Laugh: Black Comedians on Black Comedy,” the groundbreaking film examining the history and cultural influence of American black comedy, will be available on DVD starting April 27, 2010.

Directed by noted actor-producer-director Robert Townsend (“Hollywood Shuffle”), the documentary, which originally screened at Sundance in 2009 in the Premiere section, features interviews with prominent scholars, politicians, cultural critics, and a host of notable comics, including Bill Cosby, Chris Rock, Keenan Ivory Wayans, Steve Harvey, and Katt Williams.

“Why We Laugh” tracks the evolution of black comedy from the character of Stepin Fetchit and minstrels in blackface to the politically tinged humor of Dick Gregory, and from the television success of Good Times and The Jeffersons to the big-screen accomplishments of stars such as Eddie Murphy and Whoopi Goldberg. The film also turns a perceptive eye on the controversial career decision of Dave Chappelle and the implications of corporate efforts to capitalize on the massive success of Russell Simmons’s Def Comedy Jam and Spike Lee’s The Original Kings of Comedy.

“’Why We Laugh’ is a major historical contribution to American culture,” said Codeblack executive vice-president Quincy Newell. “This film is a tribute to the way one courageous person with a microphone can change history.”

Newell produced the documentary which he co-wrote with John Long. The film is based on the book “Black Comedians on Black Comedy: How African-Americans Taught Us to Laugh,” by Darryl J. Littleton. Codeblack’s Clanagan, Richard Foos, and Littleton. Codeblack’s Clanagan, Richard Foos, and Littleton are executive producers on the project.

Director Townsend has been at the forefront of black cinema for 30 years and received a Career Achievement Award from the American Black Film Festival in 2002.

R&B/soul luminary Angie Stone has never shied away from pushing her own limits and the limits of her music. With each new recording, with each next step in her career, she has consistently hit the world with something it didn’t see coming. Her new album, Unexpected, set for release on November 24th from Stax Records (a division of Concord Music Group), encompasses a diversity of styles and influences that Stone has distilled over the years – rap, R&B, soul, funk and more – and weaves them together in a narrative that addresses life’s ups and downs, but ultimately strikes a redemptive chord.

“I wanted this album to be something different,” says Stone, whose 2007 Stax debut, The Art of Love & War, was her first album to top Billboard’s R&B/hip-hop chart. “I didn’t want to make the kind of neo-soul record I had made in the past. That would have been repetitive.”

But in the midst of mapping this new direction, Stone encountered a shock that even she didn’t see coming. Mid-way through the recording process, her father – Stone’s spiritual anchor and creative mentor since her childhood in South Carolina – passed away very suddenly. “It was totally unexpected,” she says, “and that’s where I came up with the title of the album. I really didn’t think I could finish the project, because I was so grief stricken…I had to do a lot of the vocals a second time. I had to lean on my dad’s wisdom and energy, and try to be open to what he would have wanted me to do in order to finish the songs. I can say that his spirit was literally there in the studio with me, and I’m grateful for that.”

Out of this tragedy comes Unexpected, the next step forward for Stone, a stretch beyond whatever limits – real or perceived – she might have been facing when the project began. From the get-go, the quick and funky title track – with its backbeat inspired by Sly Stone’s 1971 hit, “Family Affair” – warns the listener to “Prepare yourself for just about anything.” Equally energetic is the album’s first single, “I Ain’t Hearin’ U,” a song that decries rumor and gossip. The track is co-written by vocalist and songwriter Juanita Wynn, Stone’s collaborative partner for several years.

“I Don’t Care” is a proclamation of self-acceptance and self-assurance, based on sound spiritual advice that Stone received early on: “My dad always used to tell me, ‘Don’t worry about what people say. They can’t change anything. Whatever God wants for you is most important.” “Tell Me” settles into a techno groove wherein the dual vocals by Stone and Wynn – artfully co-produced by Kerrim “Ikon” King and Fitzroy “Art Teacher” Reid – create a wall of sound that’s augmented by an edgy delivery from rapper Dose.

“Think Sometimes” is a poignant ballad inspired in large part by Stone’s late father. “It’s funny how people can slip away so fast, and suddenly they’re in your past,” she says. “You wonder about what you could have – or should have – done differently. It’ll make you think sometimes.”

Unexpected represents a turning point for Angie Stone – not just in her career, but in her life and her world view. And while the losses that triggered the transformation may be painful, the artist and her work are stronger because of them. “This album is something that no one would have anticipated coming from me. My father always encouraged me and everyone else he knew to reach out and make a leap of faith, and that’s exactly what I’ve done.”

Gettin’ around? – No matter how you slice it, Universal Republic newcomer K’Jon has already arrived. He’s just making it official on August 4, delivering his aptly titled debut album, I Get Around to stores and online platforms in time for summer, having been more than adequately introduced to urban music fans this past spring thanks to the album’s soaring first single, “On The Ocean,” which has become a radio/club classic. The magnetic hit sizzled on the nightlife grid for months as a popular ‘steppers’ hit in tastemaker cities like Chicago before rocketing to the top spot on the Urban AC radio chart.

On The Ocean

Often compared to stylish hit makers such as Ne-Yo and Robin Thicke, the talented K’Jon kept the production in-house on his debut effort, with the Detroit native guiding production and writing chores on a kaleidoscope of diverse songs that includes the passionate radio hit, as well as the mesmerizing “This Time,” the cool flow of “After The Clubs,” and some dynamo ballads – including the sweeping “Ill Never Forget,” among others. Says K’Jon: “The goal with this album was to make a record that covered a lot of emotional territory – the kind of record you would be able to listen to from beginning to end and want to hear again.” The imaginative songwriter even laid down a track that plays with the superhero mystique on the clever “Fly Away.”

But the Detroit native’s rise to stardom hasn’t been a smooth trajectory all the way. He earned his stripes in the motor city’s competitive underground urban music scene, launching various indie collaborations until his breakout 2004 cameo on the electric 2 Fast 2 Furious soundtrack with the hit “Miami.” Soon, he was opening for established stars such as Ludacris, even collaborating with the talented rapper – and subsequently – many other sought-after industry song-makers, like super-producers Cool & Dre, Ginuwine, Ne-Yo, T-Pain, and others.

Known for his fearlessness when delving into multiple genres of music, including soul, hip hop and R&B, K’Jon’s debut album reflects the same tenacity, just as his first hit single would come to separate him from the rest of the pack at one of the most crucial cross-roads of his career. “It was at a time when I was still trying to establish my identity,” he says. “I wrote the song literally thinking the music industry is kind of like bobbing in the ocean. How we all wonder if and when our ship is going to come in.” Rather than deliver the song to another established star, the intuitive artist decided to keep it as his own signature calling card, creating one of the most popular urban music hits of the year.

For Immediate Release: KINGDOM RECORDS SIGNS THE WHISPERS
Grammy-Winner Fred Hammond to Produce on Legendary R&B Group’s First Gospel CD
Kingdom Label Roster Includes RIAA Certified Gold-Selling Shekinah Glory Ministry

Chicago, IL: Kingdom Records (recording home to Shekinah Glory Ministry of “Praise is What I Do” and “Yes” fame) has signed the legendary R&B group, The Whispers, to record its’ first gospel CD. Gospel star Fred Hammond has been tapped to produce a handful of tracks for the highly anticipated project that is tentatively scheduled for a fall 2009 release.

“We’ve been wanting to do this for ten years. God has been really, really good to the Whispers,” says founding member Nick Caldwell. “He was looking out for us even when we were ignoring Him. He allowed us to live long enough to do this inspirational CD that we want to use to inspire people to get closer to God.” Pamela Blackman of Joy Management Inc. is the group’s manager for their gospel pursuits and says, “There were several offers from big labels but I feel this one is part of a divine plan for The Whispers.”

“We are excited and humbled by the coming together of Kingdom Records and The Whispers,” says Kingdom Records CEO/President, Joan Sullivan. ”We are excited because the Whispers have exhibited outstanding musical artistry over the years.”

With almost 50 R&B chart singles, The Whispers are one of the most successful vocal groups in soul music history. Twin brothers Wallace and Walter Scott (aka “Scotty”) formed the group in 1963 with Nicholas Caldwell, Marcus Hutson and Gordon Harmon (replaced by Leaveil Degree in 1973). They sang on the street corners of the Watts area of Los Angeles before they earned their first record deal in 1964. The label chief named them The Whispers because of their smooth sound. Since then the group has enjoyed a string of hits that has maintained their position as one of urban music’s top concert draws.

Among their dance-oriented hits are the #1 Billboard R&B chart singles “And the Beat Goes On” and “Rock Steady.” Other rhythmic hits include “It’s A Love Thing” and “Keep on Loving Me.” The group has also laid down their share of classic slow jams such as “Lady”, “Just Gets Better with Time”, “In the Mood” and “Say Yes.” The Grammy and American Music Award nominated ensemble has earned seven gold or platinum singles or albums, a 2002 NAACP Image Award and they were inducted into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame in 2003.

“So much for no bias!” One of my all-time favorite artists has released a brand spanking new CD entitled “Star Power”. Remember “You Are My Starship” featuring Michael Henderson? How about “We Both Need Each Other”, with Michael and Phyllis Hyman, or “Valentine Love”, starring Jean Carne and Mr. Henderson? That’s just a few of the key songs from the career of, Norman Connors.

I consider Norman one of the trailblazers throughout the jazz fusion era, which merged R&B, and the jazz music world. His ability to smoothly blend the soulful rhythms and match them with talented musicians and vocalists was uncanny. His music helped turn a lot of young folk like me into jazz fans, while getting the jazz heads to rock to the soulful downbeats.

On “Star Power”, Mr. Connors assembles a talented cast of veterans and newcomers, which leads to an enjoyable array of collaborations. The CD starts up with the jumpin’ beats of “Used To Be”, featuring Christopher Williams on vocals and Bobby Lyle on keyboards. Smooth crooner Howard Hewitt teams up with Antoinette on the lovely slow jam “Where Do We Go From Here”. You’ll also enjoy the soothing vocals of Danny Boy on “You Take My Breath Away”, and the emotional performance of “I Waited All My Life For You”, by Ms. Juanita Daley. Just when you think you heard it all, Peabo Bryson emerges with his fine rendition of the classic “You Are My Starship”.

As always, Norman has some tracks for the jazz lover in you. The title track “Star Power”, lead by Kirk Wilson on keyboards, and “Shades Of Brown” featuring Norman & Michael Brown, along with “Stormin’ Norman” showcases the essence of the Starship Orchestra instrumental sound. .

“Star Power”, the latest project from Norman Connors is a must have. It’s Jazz.. It’s R&B.. It’s funky, yet it’s smooth. As my longtime friend likes to say, “It’s the best of all possible worlds!”

PRESS RELEASE

Multi-Platinum Producer Extraordinaire and Multi-Instrumentalist Norman Connors Pulls Out all the Stops on Star Power

Connors’ Shanachie Debut Joins Together Some of R&B and Jazz’s Brightest Stars Including Peabo Bryson, Howard Hewitt, Christopher Williams, Marion Meadows, Bobby Lyle, Ray Parker Jr., Norman Brown & Others

For Norman Connors music was a matter of destiny, not choice. It is this kismet that allowed the multi-faceted and dynamic musician at the tender age of 16 to perform alongside legendary jazz saxophonist John Coltrane and travel to NY with nothing but his drum sticks and $20 in his pocket, only to end up landing a full scholarship to the prestigious Juilliard School of Music. Destined to leave his indelible imprint on the music scene, Norman Connors would go on to discover such revered vocalists as Phyllis Hyman, Angela Bofill, Dee Dee Bridgewater and Jean Carne, produce a track for the iconic Stevie Wonder and create one of R&B’s greatest ‘Quiet Storm’ anthems with Michael Henderson’s, “You Are My Starship.” This 1976 chart-topping single, that has been sampled by everyone from LL Cool J to Snoop Dogg, went on to spawn an entire genre of music fusing the worlds of jazz and R&B. Never one to sit still, Norman Connors is at it again with a new project that is destined to further endear him to critics and fans alike as one of music’s greatest treasures. Star Power, the multi platinum-selling producer’s Shanachie debut and first recording in seven years (due out on February 24, 2009) is a momentous occasion that joins Connors with some of his dear friends and some new ones including vocalists Peabo Bryson, Howard Hewitt and Christopher Williams, bassist (and vocalist) Michael Henderson, saxophonist Marion Meadows, keyboardists Herman Jackson and Bobby Lyle and guitarists Ray Parker Jr., Norman Brown and Paul Jackson, Jr. among others.

“Throughout my career, there have been certain singers that I have always wanted to work with and on this new project I get to do just that,” Connors relates. His affinity for singers goes back to his youth. “I used to take my drum lessons on Saturday and there was a theatre called the Earle Theatre in Philly. They used to show a Tarzan movie and after the movie they would have people like Duke Ellington and Count Basie perform and I would make sure to be there, right in the front row. I was like a kid in a toy shop. Right after the band played the singer would come out in a gown. Hearing people like Sarah and Ella at a young age made me fall in love with great voices.”

The opening track on Star Power, “Used to Be,” features keyboardist Bobby Lyle and vocalist Christopher Williams, known for the R&B hit “I’m Dreamin’.” “This is the first time Christopher Williams and I have ever collaborated with one another. I had heard about him and I had seen him in the film New Jack City. His singing reminds me of a young Teddy Pendergrass. When I got this song, he came to mind. I felt like Christopher would be the best person to pull it off.” Lyle and Connors have worked together for years and Connors considers him a vital part of any recording he does.

Vocalists Howard Hewitt and Antoinette Manganas join forces for Manganas’ sultry ballad “Where Do We Go From Here,” which Connors cites as one of his favorites on the album.

Antoinette is also featured on Sade’s classic “The Sweetest Taboo and the Bacharach/David hit “Walk on By.” “Howard and Antoinette sound great together,” says Connors. “I have always wanted to work with Howard Hewitt, who I have loved since his Shalamar days. His voice is magnificent.”

In 1976, Norman Connors and Michael Henderson (long time bassist with Miles Davis) got together to create what is now one of R&B’s most covered and highly sampled ‘Quiet Storm’ classics, “You Are My Starship.” The duo returns to this gem on Star Power and enlists the help of Grammy winning singer Peabo Bryson. Norman Connors says he can’t play a show without someone requesting this song. He said he knew it would be a hit from the very beginning. “Michael had the sound, right concept and flow, and there was something mystical about the song. I was the only one who thought it was a hit!” Grammy-winning vocalist Peabo Bryson shines on Star Power’s new version of “You are My Starship.” Norman Connors says, “I have worked with Peabo a number of times in concert and on recordings and he is one of my all-time favorite singers along with Donnie Hathaway and Marvin Gaye.”

Through the years, Connors has had a keen ability to discover and nurture new talent. He has been instrumental in so many musicians’ careers including Phyllis Hyman, Angela Bofill, Michael Henderson, Glenn Jones, Norman Brown and countless others. “I consider myself not just an artist and musician but I am an ambassador of the music. A lot of people call me up and I give them advice,” shares Connors. On Star Power, Norman is proud to feature an up-and-coming singer that he says will be the next big thing. His name is Danny Boy. “He has such talent that he is sure to blow in the next year. He is incredible. He is my ace in the hole at my live shows. He has a beautiful spirit and can sing anything. He’s like a young Peabo Bryson and Donnie Hathaway all in one. Has great range and can dance. He is all over the stage and sings his heart out!” declares Connors. Danny Boy is featured on the Stevie Crissette and Max Frank song “You Take My Breath Away.”

Star Power also features several memorable instrumental tracks including a funky version of Michael Jackson’s 1979 hit “Rock With You” featuring guitarist Ray Parker, Jr., who has garnered scores of hits including “Ghostbusters.” “I have known Ray Parker Jr. since he was fresh out of high school. We were label mates on Arista years ago and I always admired his way of singing simple things and being able to take them and make them hits.” Herman Jackson, who is the keyboardist on American Idol and who has served as music director for both Aretha Franklin and Jessica Simpson, penned the cool and breezy “Stormin’ Norman” for Connors who says he does not do a record unless he calls Herman. Jackson also joins guitarist Norman Brown on “Shades of Brown,” which he also composed. “I love Norman Brown,” says Connors, who produced Brown’s first single “Things Between Us,” which hit #1 on the charts. “He is one of my favorite guitarists along with George Benson. I call him one of my hero children. I usually don’t do an album without him either.”

Born in the City of Brotherly Love, Norman Connors has the luxury of being immersed in the City’s rich jazz and R&B tradition. When he first started out, his dream was to be John Coltrane’s drummer. As fate would have it he performed with Trane at the famed Peps in Philly one night when Elvin Jones got arrested. Connors ended up playing three nights in a row! Connors’ early jazz aspirations did not keep him from following many of the great R&B groups of the day. “I have always loved the Delfonics and Stylistics,” says Norman. “Deep down inside I always wanted to be a Delfonic. When we used to play jazz gigs at places like the Sugar Shack in Boston and I had a 25-minute break, I would go check out the Delfonics who might be up the block performing. I always told myself that if I ever got a record deal I was going to include some of this great R&B tradition in my music. My early albums were more fusion but as I got into my fourth and fifth albums I started bringing in that R&B element.”

Norman Connors illustrious resume includes work with saxophonists Pharoah Sanders, Jackie McLean, Archie Shepp and Sam Rivers and organist Jack McDuff along with a list of other jazz luminaries. He has also produced for everyone from Angela Bofill, Phyllis Hyman, Peabo Byrson and Howard Hewitt to Lonnie Liston Smith and Bobby Lyle. Connors signed with Buddah’s Cobblestone record label in 1972 and recorded a string of critically acclaimed albums that reached multi-platinum selling status. Among Connors recordings during this period are Dance of Magic, which featured the all-star lineup of Herbie Hancock (who appears on Norman’s first five albums), Stanley Clarke, Ron Carter, Hubert Laws, Gary Bartz, Carlos Garnett and Dee Dee Bridgewater. Connors also made the recordings Dark of Light, Love from the Sun, Slewfoot and Saturday Night Special, featuring the number 10 soul hit “Valentine Love.” In 1976 Connors struck gold with the hit “You Are My Starship,” from the album of the same title, which also included the chart-topping Thom Bell and Linda Creed classic “Betcha By Golly Wow” featuring Phyllis Hyman. In the late 70s Connors was courted by Clive Davis who signed him to Arista Records. His debut for the label, This Is Your Life made a splash with the title track.

He also enjoyed success with his album Invitation, which featured his celebrated Starship Orchestra that included Bobby Lyle, Onaje Allan Gumbs, Marion Meadows and Jean Carne among others. He recorded four albums for Aritsta before signing with Capitol in the late 80s and then Motown’s jazz label, Mojazz, in the 90s.

Norman Connors is still shooting for the stars and his musical universe just gets better and better with each passing year. Star Power affirms Norman Connors presence as an incredible musical force who knows how to make music for the heart, mind and soul.

“This record feels so good,” exclaims Norman. “All of these guys who join me on the album are my boys. We have experienced a lot together both personally and musically. It’s like one big fraternity.” It is this brotherhood heard on Star Power that makes for one thoroughly enjoyable recording and cohesive set of music that never lets up from beginning to end.

For Immediate Release

The Masterful Joe Sample and Randy Crawford Celebrate 33 Years of Magical Music Making With Their Soul-Slanted Second Duo CD, “NO REGRETS”

Certain exceptional musical matches are unquestionably made in Heaven. The day that ubiquitous keyboard journeyman Joe Sample arrived at the studio to lend his distinctive piano touch to singer extraordinaire Randy Crawford’s debut album Everything Must Change in 1976, one of the finest pairings in contemporary jazz was born.

Off and on through the years, these soul mates have made sweet music together – from the now classic “Street Life” which Randy sang with Joe’s group The Crusaders to Randy’s own album Now We May Begin, for which Joe was a co-producer. These stellar guest appearances eventually led to the inevitable: a duo project as co-headliners. March 24, 2009 will see the release of Joe Sample & Randy Crawford’s second album of collaborations titled No Regrets. It’s the much anticipated follow-up to their first such collection in 2006, Grammy nominated Feeling Good, which peaked at #3 on the Billboard Contemporary Jazz Chart and paved the way for a successful string of tours around the world. No Regrets promises to lean in more of a soulful direction, featuring both remakes of R&B classics such as Aretha Franklin’s “Today I Sing The Blues” and The Staple Singers’ “Respect Yourself” plus other songs from across the eras done in a jazzy-soul style such as the legendary Edith Piaf chestnut “No Regrets” to contemporary pop singer/songwriter Sarah McLachlan’s “Angel.” All of the material was handpicked by Joe & Randy with producer Tommy LiPuma who knows them well, having worked with both artists individually and collectively even beyond these 33 years.

Sample states, “Randy and I wanted to keep this recording on more of the rhythm and blues side. And, as always, we wanted to pick songs that nobody else records. The process was very methodical. I remember a lot of songs from the `40s and `50s, and Tommy – who’s about two years older than me – has been looking for songs all his life as a record producer. Randy asked Tommy and me if we would look for the material, so one afternoon I went over to Tommy’s and we sifted through hundreds of CDs and albums. When we found something we both liked, the next step was, ‘What can I do to make these arrangements interesting for me? If I can do that, then I can get other people interested.’ Then, after carefully considering the lyrics, we’d present them to Randy to see how she felt.”

The result is a collection of music that sets and sustains a laidback late night groove – a time and space where the listener can do just that – relax and really listen to Joe & Randy’s custom made takes on everything from blues great Bobby Blue Bland’s “Lead Me On” to Songwriters Hall of Fame inductee Randy Newman’s poignant “Just One Smile,” the latter of which significantly impressed Mr. Newman who told his old friend Mr. LiPuma personally. Key to setting this mood is the returning rhythm section of world class veterans Steve Gadd on drums and Christian McBride on bass – ultra sensitive sidemen who provide the music with precisely what it requires and nothing more. “Anyone who knows me understands that I demand attention to dynamics,” Sample continues. “Both of these outstanding gentlemen touch their instruments the same way I touch mine – with sensitivity and taste.”

This fantastically laid foundation brings out the very best in Miss Randy Crawford for 11 soul-stirring performances. One London Times reviewer marveled at how after 30+ years her voice still retains such “youth and power.” Sample proudly describes her succinctly as “an American treasure.”

Joe Sample and Randy Crawford’s No Regrets is a top shelf sample of masters at play.

On January 13, Blue Note Records will commemorate the label’s 70th anniversary with the release of Mosaic: A Celebration of Blue Note Records; an eight-song collection of classic Blue Note repertoire re-envisioned by The Blue Note 7, an all-star septet comprising pianist, musical director, and current Blue Note recording artist Bill Charlap with trumpeter Nicholas Payton, tenor saxophonist Ravi Coltrane, alto saxophonist/flutist Steve Wilson, guitarist Peter Bernstein, bassist Peter Washington and drummer Lewis Nash.

The label was born on January 6, 1939 when a young jazz fan named Alfred Lion recorded two of his favorite boogie-woogie pianists at a New York studio. That first session (Albert Ammons and Meade Lux Lewis – The First Day) proved to be the start of an illustrious history that continues to this day.

Over the course of its seven decades in business, Blue Note has recorded virtually every major figure in modern jazz, from pioneers like Thelonious Monk and John Coltrane to contemporary masters like Wynton Marsalis and Joe Lovano.
